About the plant

Adenium socotranum is the large-form extreme of the genus. Native to the island of Socotra off the Horn of Africa, it builds a caudex on a scale that makes even a heavy arabicum look modest. This is a true species — botanically distinct — not one of the arabicum selections that often get passed off as socotranum.

Growth is slower and more deliberate than arabicum, and that's the trade. Socotranum rewards patience with a wide, columnar caudex that has no equal in the genus, finished with pale pink blooms. Nothing else in a collection reads quite like it.

Fresh, viable socotranum seed is genuinely hard to come by outside its native range. I source this from Thai growers who've done the work to produce fresh-harvested stock — the kind of access that doesn't exist through domestic channels on any consistent basis.

Growing it in Zone 6 — and anywhere cold

I've grown Adenium in Northern Kentucky for over 30 years, and socotranum asks for the same thing all my caudex seedlings need: warmth, light, and a fast-draining inorganic mix. Give the seed bottom heat to germinate, keep young seedlings warm and bright through their first winter indoors, and don't rush the watering. Slow and steady is how socotranum wants to grow — fighting that is the most common way people lose it.
